A Penguin Family, by Joe Sustar
When Winnie and Picky returned from their south pole adventure last week, they brought back a two foot tall stuffed animal penguin for Siena. Coupled with the little puffin that Siena got from the zoo last year, she calls the new penguin the mommy penguin and the small puffin the baby penguin. She has been telling us that she needs a Siena penguin and a daddy penguin.
During nap time today, she had her mommy and baby penguins, and she decided that her teddy bear was now the daddy penguin. As I was leaving her room, she kept fussing, telling me that she needed a Siena penguin. I told her those were the only penguins we had, so she needed to go to sleep. She continued to insist that I get her the Siena penguin. After a few back-and-forths of me telling her that we didn't have one and she telling me to get one, she eventually told me in her best "Dad, you clearly don't get it" voice, "No, Daddy, just PRETEND that we have a Siena penguin."
So I went to her stuffed animal bin and got her a small stuffed dog, larger than the baby puffin, but smaller than the mommy and daddy penguins. I figured this would make a good Siena penguin. It did not. She told me that she didn't want the dog. She then told me that her Madeline doll was the Siena penguin. So I got her Madeline doll, but she told me that I got the wrong one. I, stupidly, got the Madeline doll with her standard blue jacket. I failed to realize that the Siena penguin was the Madeline doll with the green winter jacket. So I got the Madeline with the green jacket, gave it to Siena, she confirmed that this was, in fact, the Siena penguin, and she fell right asleep.
The end.

Sleeping through the Night!!
Yes folks, our little Elizabeth has now slept through the night two nights in a row!! Her sleeping has been much better for the past month or so, with only one or two wakings a night, but this "holy grail of parenting" had continued to elude us. Not anymore! We're keeping our fingers crossed that this new trend continues. She's a happy camper these days, as you can see.
Swinging
Swinging is a big hit these days. Siena has discovered tire swings, and Libby loved her first-ever swing at the park yesterday!
To the Zoo
We've had unseasonably warm weather lately, which has been a welcome change from the icy winter. Bring on the spring! We celebrated last week with a zoo trip with Dylan, his mommy Samantha, and baby brother Noah.

Siena's First Haircut!
Siena's hair has been getting a bit scraggly lately and badly needed a cut. I was curious how she'd do at a salon since she often protests when I comb her hair, but we had a GREAT experience. We visited the local "kids" salon, which had pretty much every fun distraction a kid could ask for -- a racecar for a seat (choice of pink or blue), their choice of DVD to watch, a "princess" cape to wear, and a lollipop to enjoy on top of it all. Needless to say Siena can't wait for her next haircut! Her frayed ends were cut, her bangs trimmed, and her hair was layered a bit to bring out the curl. The results were fantastic and Siena loves her new 'do.
The setup, pink car chair and all. Siena chose a Kermit the Frog video to watch. Where were these places when we were kids?

All Kinds of Families
One of Siena's favorite things to do right now is arrange whatever she's playing with into a family. OUR family, to be specific -- Daddy, Mommy, Siena, and Libby. She's very careful to point out that the smallest thing is Libby, the next smallest is Siena, and so forth. This game was reinforced by a great book she received from Auntie Putz for Christmas, "All Kinds of Families" by Mary Ann Hoberman. It's SO cute and right up Siena's alley. Here she is with a family of crayons. Can you guess which one is the Siena crayon?
Self Feeding
Libby has recently started feeding herself, which is great fun for all involved (and a big help for Mommy!). Puffs are a favorite, along with bananas. At 8 months, she really is growing up so quickly now and loves to babble, smile, and laugh. Her personality is starting to emerge and I'm detecting some of her sister's goofiness. We'll see! She is constantly exploring new territory around the house and clearly loves her new independence. She's still sleeping well, too (hooray!). It's a great stage of babyhood -- one of my favorites.

The Blizzard of 2011
It's been quite the winter so far! Two weeks ago we were hit with the "blizzard of the century", which didn't quite live up to the hype around here but was impressive nonetheless. Two straight days of ice followed by a day of snow forced everything to shut down -- interstates, airports, and (best of all for us) schools. Joe had 2 1/2 days off of work! The ice has been especially treacherous and has only now melted away thanks to a recent warm front. We had a great time in the snow while it lasted, as you can see.
Day 2 of the blizzard... A beautiful day for a walk with Daddy, don't you think? The freezing rain and sleet didn't stop this crew from enjoying a stroll! Siena loved her perch on Daddy's back, and Libby fell asleep in the stroller in no time. It was covered in ice by the time they returned.
They're off!
Let's build a snowman! We were hit with another 4 inches of snow a few days after the blizzard, which gave us perfect snowman conditions. This photo pretty much sums up our snowman building process... Daddy builds the snowman, Siena eats the snow.

Libby Crawls
The real thing! She's all over the place now and is loving her new mobility. Siena loved Libby's crawling at first as well, until she realized that all of her toys are now fair game! Ah, the joys of learning to share. Life is getting more and more exciting around here to say the least!
Starting to Crawl...
This video was taken about 2 weeks ago, when Libby was just starting to get around. Siena is her biggest cheerleader, for sure! You'll get a good sampling of one of Siena's favorite questions in this video: "Why are you laughing?".
